1277 larger volumes. As cryptosporidiosis is very common in bovine species ordinary colostrum from some cows may be effective. Hyperimmune bovine colostrum is safer than most drugs, which is a consideration when treating debilitated patients, and, should microbial contamination of colostrum pose a problem in immuno-deficient individuals, it could be gamma irradiated without affecting the immunoglobulin concentration. Hyperimmune bovine colo-strum appears to be a useful adjunct in the treatment of diarrhoea due to infection with cryptosporidium in patients with immuno-deficiency disorders, particularly those in whom treatment with antibiotics has failed. In this patient, however, the rare complication of ascending biliary tract infection was not prevented. References 1 Lasser KH, Lewin KJ, Ryning iFW. Holt-Oram syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder, characterised by skeletal abnormalities of the upper limb associated with congenital heart defect, mainly atrial and ventricular septal defects. Skeletal defects exclusively affect the upper limbs in the preaxial radial ray distribution and are bilateral and asymmetrical. They range from clinodactyly, absent or digitalised thumb, hypoplastic...

Simultaneous Closure of a Left Atrial Appendage through an Atrial Septal Defect and the Atrial Septal Defect

Left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion can be employed as an alternative treatment to oral anticoagulation in patients with atrial fibrillation to prevent embolic events. Atrial septal defect (ASD) may be related with right heart dysfunction and allow paradoxical embolism to occur. However, occlusion of both LAA through atrial access with ostium secundum ASD and ASD in the same setting is unusua...

Acute paradoxical embolic cerebral ischemia secondary to possible May-Thurner syndrome and an atrial septal defect: a case report

INTRODUCTION May-Thurner syndrome is an anatomic abnormality that predisposes patients to increased risk of paradoxical embolism and stroke. It consists of chronic compression of the left common iliac vein by the overlying right common iliac artery which may predispose to local thrombus formation, which in turn may be the nidus of a paradoxical embolus leading to cerebral ischemia in patients w...

Acute arterial embolism of left lower extremity caused by paradoxical embolism in Ebstein's anomaly

INTRODUCTION Ebstein's anomaly is a benign and stable congenital heart disease for asymptomatic patients. Despite a low incidence of Ebstein's anomaly (EA), patients' quality of life can be badly affected by EA without positive surgical intervention. Especially EA is associated with other congenital heart disease, such as the atrial septal defect, patent foramen ovale, and arterial embolism exc...
